PageMaster Overview

PageMaster is a Windows application that sends text messages to cellphones, alphanumeric pagers, numeric pagers, and any other devices capable of receiving text and SMS messages.

PageMaster is designed to fulfill different roles depending on your requirements. In its most basic mode, PageMaster can operate as a stand-alone text messaging terminal. A database of devices (i.e. Pager, Cellphone, Blackberry) is created, and messages are set to those devices using PageMaster's internal Text Messaging Engine.

However, PageMaster also offers several configurations for multi-user or Enterprise use.

Product Features

Starting from its basic mode, PageMaster can be installed on multiple computers, each containing its own database of devices, or the database may be centrally located on a network share and provide a common device list. Each computer can then send text messages through its own internal Text Messaging Engine.

With the use of Omnitrend's PageMaster/sv Text Messaging Server, each PageMaster installation can be configured to transmit page requests to a central point. The PageMaster/sv server will then orchestrate the transmission of messages from its Text Messaging Engine. PageMaster/sv will batch messages for service providers and transmit them in the most efficient manner for optimum throughput. This also provides the benefit of centralizing the logging of sent messages.

PageMaster can also be configured to transmit text messages to a PageMaster/ex Text Messaging Connector for Microsoft Exchange Server. In this mode, PageMaster provides the following benefits over the normal message processing provided by PageMaster/ex:

• The PageMaster client can be employed on machines that do not have an email client (i.e. Outlook) installed and connected to Exchange Server. PageMaster routes its
  messages to PageMaster/ex through a DCOM interface, external to mail handling, so a mail client is unnecessary. The device list is read directly from Active Directory,
  so no separate device database need be maintained for PageMaster clients.
  
• The PageMaster client can provide backup paging capability in the event of an Exchange or network outage. Automatic fallback from a primary PageMaster/ex connection will reroute messaging first to any stand-alone PageMaster/sv servers, then ultimately to the client's own internal Text Messaging Engine.
  
• The PageMaster client provides additional messaging options not available when messaging through a mail clients. This includes pre-define (or "canned") messages that can be sent quickly using a hotkey combination, scheduled and automatically recurring messages, and many formatting options for message content.
  

These client-server architectures are scalable and can process the needs of small organizations requiring only a modest messaging volume, up to an entire Enterprise processing tens of thousands of messages per day.

No matter which mode is utilized, PageMaster supports all standardized text messaging protocols, including TAP, SNPP, WCTP, SMPP, SMTP, and DTMF.

The PageMaster client can also provide an avenue through which another application (such as Visual Basic or Microsoft Access) may send text messages. These include:

DDE Support

PageMaster can be directed to send text messages through Windows DDE commands. Windows DDE allows Windows programs to communicate with one another. With DDE, other programs (such as Visual Basic or Microsoft Access) can send test message to pagers and cell phones.

Pre-Defined Messages

PageMaster allows you to type in frequently used messages and save them under keywords. These messages may then be used without the need for retyping each time the message needs to be sent.

Scheduled Text Messaging

PageMaster allows text messages to be scheduled for delivery at a future date and time. These scheduled messages may also be set to automatically regenerate at a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. You could, for example, define a message to be sent every Friday at 1:45 to remind you of a weekly 2:00 meeting.

Modem Requirements

PageMaster requires one Hayes-compatible 2400 baud or faster modem for operation if using the TAP or DTMF protocols.

Note: Extended support permits you to open a support case without charge. No per-incident fee will be incurred regardless of the cause of or solution to the problem. There is no limit on the number of support cases that may be opened during the one year period. The only support fee is the cost of the extended support period itself.

Gold support offers the same support privileges as Extended Support, but includes maintenance. For the term of the support agreement, Omnitrend will provide any updates and new versions of the software at no additional cost.

  • PageMaster now supports the ability to nest groups: that is, for groups to be members of other groups.
• CC: Field
  • PageMaster now supports the ability to specify devices to be CCd (carbon copied) when a message is sent to a specific device. This is analogous to the cc: field in an email message.
• Global Preference Settings
  • Previously, PageMaster's preference settings were stored on a per-user basis. Under configurations where more than one user would log onto a computer, it would require each user to enter all desired preference settings.In PageMaster 5, the option is given, for each preference category (i.e. Connectivity, Database, Content, etc.), to store the preference settings globally. This eliminates the need to configure the software for each user independently.
• Automated Licensing
  • Previously, when activating a license for PageMaster, it was required that the user contact an Omnitrend representative by phone to obtain an activation code.In PageMaster 5, at the time of purchase, a serial number will be issued that will enable the user to activate the software automatically over the Internet.In addition, for users with multi-computer licenses, a single serial number is all that is required. Previously, an activation code would be required for each computer.
• Logging of Text Message Sent via Servers
  • PageMaster 5 will now log all messages sent to both PageMaster/ex and PageMaster/sv servers.
• Customizable Sniff File Interval
  • PageMaster 5 will now allow you to modify the interval in which the sniff file is checked (see the -S command under Command Line Parameters for information on the sniff file). A new -I command line parameter allows the interval to be set from 1 to 120 seconds.
• Updated Text Messaging Engine
  • TAP Protocol Upgrades
    • Enhanced Security - The TAP engine in PageMaster 5 has been rewritten in accordance with Microsoft's security initiative. This ensures that TAP engine code does not use any legacy APIs or deprecated function calls known to be security concerns.

  • SNPP Protocol Upgrades
    • Support for SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections - Many SNPP providers are now supporting the transmission of text messages encrypted using SSL. This new feature allows PageMaster 5 to negotiate an SSL connection in order to transmit the message data in this encrypted format.
    • Support for the SNPP Level 3 protocol specification - Changes to the SNPP engine in PageMaster 5 bring it into compliance with SNPP servers supporting Level 3 functionality.
    • Enhanced Security - The SNPP engine in PageMaster 5 has been rewritten in accordance with Microsoft's security initiative. This ensures that SNPP engine code does not use any legacy APIs or deprecated function calls known to be security concerns.
    • Support for Limiting Number of Messages Sent per Connection - In order to reduce spam, many providers are now limiting the number of text messages that can be sent in each connection to their SNPP server. PageMaster 5 now supports a property that limits the number of messages it will send in each connection session. PageMaster/ex will automatically reconnect as necessary in order to transmit all messages queued.
  • WCTP Protocol Upgrades

  • Support for SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections - Many WCTP providers are now supporting the transmission of text messages encrypted using SSL. This new feature allows PageMaster 5 to negotiate an SSL connection in order to transmit the message data in this encrypted format.

  • SMTP Protocol Upgrades
    • Added flexibility in SMTP address specifications - PageMaster 5 now allows more flexibility in how SMTP address templates can be specified for each service provider. This allows PageMaster 5 to be used for providers that use formats other than pin@domain.com.
    • Enhanced Security - The SMTP engine in PageMaster 5 has been rewritten in accordance with Microsoft's security initiative. This ensures that SMTP engine code does not use any legacy APIs or deprecated function calls known to be security concerns.

Current Modem List

This file contains the most current modem configuration information for PageMaster. It may contain support for additional modems not included in the full installation. To install, download this file (Modems.dat) and copy it into your PageMaster directory.

Microsoft Access 2.0 ODBC Pager Table (PageMaster 1.x - 3.x Only)

This file is a Microsoft Access 2.0 database that contains a single table. This table is a template that can be used to create a device list to be used with PageMaster's ODBC connectivity. This file is not required for PageMaster 4.x, as that version includes an Access database template.

Microsoft Access 7.0 ODBC Pager Table (PageMaster 1.x - 3.x Only)

This file is a Microsoft Access 7.0 database that contains a single table. This table is a template that can be used to create a device list to be used with PageMaster's ODBC connectivity. This file is not required for PageMaster 4.x, as that version includes an Access database template.

You may download an evaluation copy of PageMaster by using the links below. The evaluation copy will operate for 14 days. The evaluation copy can be unlocked by purchasing an activation code from Omnitrend.

If you currently own one or more registered copies of PageMaster 6, the evaluation copy can be downloaded and installed over your existing copy of the software. It will automatically recognize your existing license.
